I am new keeping chickens and new to this site. You guys are great and I have found some very useful info here.
I have 4 buff girls that are approx 8 weeks old. Like some of you I live in one of those new subdivisions on a .33 acre lot. Our HOA says we are not allowed to have working farms on our property but I did check with the agent that sold us the house and he said chickens as pets are fine. Hens are OK but definately no roos. I am loving it. They are soooo entertaining. My poor husbands only complaint is I spent $250 on lumber and supplies to build the chicken coop to house $8 worth of chickens. Our girls are called Mrs. Tweedy, Babs, Bunty and Eggwina. Yes I am a huge fan of Chicken Run.

No Longer Chickenless in Massachusetts!
DH, who thinks he's not a chicken person, converted my dog kennel into a beautiful coop, but it was empty for too long, as a couple of chicken deals fell through. Finally, thanks to Craig's list, I found a person in a neighboring town who had to thin out her flock and sold me two NH Reds (Gertie and Gladys) and an Americauna (Gwendolyn). They are 20 weeks old so I'm expecting eggs any day. I'm also buying three 12-week old Americauna pullets, so I think that will fill the needs of our household of two with some eggs left over to share with the rest of the family. We have 17 acres, but most of it is used by our equestrian center (28 horses). The total kennel area is 25'x40' (6' chain link fence) divided into three runs, and adjacent to our 1/2 acre back yard which is fenced with 4' chain link. Plenty of room for our small flock to free range safely, and the coop has room to add a few younger hens down the road.
I persuaded my recalcitrant husband to participate in the chicken venture by promising him one of his absolute favorite custard pies/week. (6 eggs) He has been know to polish one off in 24 hours.

My boyfriend and I have 4 hens (2 BR's and 2 EE's). They give us 2-4 eggs a day - enough to give away plenty and still have EggFest every Saturday. Our yard is a decent size but they stay in their deluxe chicken palace which is roughly 100 square feet.
