Average Life Span of a Chicken/Rooster?

Longevity is probably more about successfully protecting them from predators than anything else. You can keep them in good feed, a good clean coop, practice good hygiene re garding not exposing them to other chickens that are not in your flock but the predators are the hardest sometimes to prevent.
I've lost one to being egg bound, I had a rooster once I found him in the run and he was just dead like he had a heart attack or something but the rest I lost to predators - The Wacko-crazy next door neighbor kind - He is doing time "out of town" with the county. Foxes, racoons, snakes, dogs, red neck children with bb guns and no parental supervision trespassing.

The human predators are the worst. I literally gave up for a while.

Found plans for a more secure coop & Run set up to protect against the animal kind of predator. It has been a long journey.

I have 7 originals left from my first flock of 26. They will be 8 years old in about 3 weeks. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing when I first started so they lived in spite of me not because of me

I recently read that a rooster in good health can live for 15 to 20 years and a chicken for 8-12 years. I had no idea they were that long lived! Can this be true?
I'm sure for a chicken they wouldn't be laying all that time but this seems like an excessive estimate even barring anything unforeseen such as predators or disease.

New Egg with 10 chickens and a rooster

I have a production red and buff Orpington that are both consistently laying at 6 years old. Not as much as when they were young but they are still productive for sure. I wonder how long they will live too.
