ETA: All but one of my layers produces large brown eggs. I sell them for $2.50 / doz. and most of my friends & customers save cartons for me, too.

Check how much a dozen is around your area (farmers market, health food store....). Consider the money you spend on the layer crumble/pellets. In SoCal that is pretty expensive for both. I get $ 4.20 for a dozen of blue and green eggs, $ 3.60 for smaller brown eggs. It is "Take it or leave it" and trust me, my 14 girls are laying machines right now, but I still have a long waiting list for eggs, just no more room for more chickens.

I sell mine for $2/dozen. There are alot of people that sell them around hereand that seems to be the going price. I have 30 pullets and it covers the cost of feed with a little left over which I give to the grandkids for collecting them.

I'm thinking about starting at $1 for 6 eggs and investing in some of the breakable cardboard cartons. I think I could get some regular customers at the school where I teach. If it takes off then upping the ante for a dozen. I'll only have 8 layers and we use lots of eggs, so I doubt I'll have many to sell! If it REALLY takes off then maybe more chickens......

I sell mine for $2.50 doz. I sell all I get. Right now I am getting about a doz a day. I also use a lot of eggs. being diabetic I cook all of our bread and sweets, so I use over a doz a week for that. I have 32 chickens and they don't all lay every day. I average between 12 to 18 eggs a day usually. It is hot here so now I am getting only 12 or 13 a day.

In the store they are selling really cheap but any one that has bought my eggs knows the difference in store bought and my eggs.

The chickens are not out of the pen now as we have a garden but they get lots of garden and weed greens everyday. I feed them black sunflower seeds and some scratch on the ground twice a day to keep them busy. That is besides the layer.

The amount I get for the eggs does not pay for my feed. I guess I feed too good. If I just stuck with the layer maybe.

I love my chickens though and want they to have the best. LOL

I know if I had more eggs I could sell more. I give a man that collects cartons for me free eggs for the cartons and try to get the people to bring back the cartons but that doesn't usually happen.

I fed my chicks conventional feed for the first 7 weeks, then switched to organic feed. They free range in my back yard which is never treated with any chemicals of any kind and they get organic kitchen scraps (produce only). So you're saying that their eggs wouldn't be considered organic because for the first 7 weeks they weren't getting organic feed?
