Hi everyone,
I am currently an owner of ten zebra finches and five Japanese quail and five Italian in a H-7ft W-10ft L-17ft outdoor aviary. Can you tell me what birds are compacable with them and that are hardy as they would be outside all year. I was thinking diamond doves? Also my quail have not laid any eggs yet. Is this down to them not being old enough? All my quail are hens as I just require the eggs.
Please let me know as it would really help,
Thanks again.

How old are the quail (they are sexually mature at 6 weeks of age) and what are they being fed? What is your location? Ring neck doves also work well in a mixed aviary as do most of the dove species. Many of the finch species are also nonaggressive. Cockatiels are fairly good in mixed flocks as are the grass parakeets like the bourkes parakeet. Do not get budgies as they are aggressive to other species.

The quail are around 3 to 4 months old and they are fed poultry grower pellets and mealworms. My location is summerset. There is no breeders around my local area for ring neck doves, but there are for diamond doves cockatiels bourkes parakeets. Are they hardy as they would be outdoors all year round. Which birds would be best for an aviary and how many should I get? Thanks again.

A suggestion-when I had button quail and wanted them to lay I fed them laying mash and it worked. Summerset? Which one? I have never had an outdoor aviary so I hesitate to make any recommendations. I have seen pictures and videos of Canadian aviaries that showed cockatiels in an outdoor aviary covered in snow. Many of these birds can adapt to cooler temperatures. Your best bet is to do some research on outdoor aviaries. Most likely you will find information on the internet. As for how many-fewer is better and it depends on the species that you get and their individual requirements..

Thanks, I will try laying mash. I will do some research on outdoor aviary's.
I would only get a pair of diamond doves and bourkes parakeets if they are ok with ten quail and ten zebra finches. I read that budgies will kill the zebra hens if they want the nest box and will fight together. Do you have an aviary? And what birds do you keep? Thanks again.

I keep about 7 zebra finches three cockatiels and 7 button quails at the bottone of a 9ft L by 6.5ft H by 4 ft W. The quails will be kept together for a few days till they can feed themselves as they were parent raised and then seperated so the pair can nest again. For autumn when laying stops all quail will be placed together for winter.
