Avid newbies

We put them in as hanging...but after that first interaction they seemed a bit startled...so I cut them off, with a tail and now they just toss them around and have fun. :)

Welcome to BYC!:frow

Gotta ask- How did you get a cattle dog x chihuahua? Tiny cattle dog?
:caf
Coby was pure luck, we had two senior dogs, a 14 yo Chocolate Lab and a 14 yo Malamute/Husky and wanted a third...more dynamic friend. Our vet showed him to us and it was immediate love. He came from batch of strays shipped up from the Bakersfield CA area. He is an amazing little fellow.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you are handy with tools. I suggest that you run fast and far away from the many pre-fab coops on the market. I'm sure you've read the general recommendation for 4 s.f. in coop and 10 s.f. in run per bird. I would go even bigger than that. Do you have raised beds? You might consider making your coop run such that you could "marry" it to a raised bed. Let the chooks work one raised bed while you grow in the other. Or you could build a 4 x 8 walk in style, which could be repurposed to a garden shed if you ever decide that chickens are not your "bag". However, with your interests, especially gardening, I doubt that day will come.

Be sure to visit your state thread, as well as the many gardening threads.

I also love to kayak!

Welcome to the BYC From over in the Puyallup/South Hill area of Western Washington. We have found using sand in the run is much easier and better to use. Easy clean up and of course with the rain here in the PNW doesn't mold or mildew like straw or hay. Just little tip... Enjoy your new chicks.
