Avoiding soy, canola, & cotton seed in chicken feed.

I am looking for a chicken feed that is affordable but doesn't contain canola, soy or cotton. I am not averse to bone meal, blood meal or fish meal. Unfortunatly all of the feed mills who would be willing to make such a feed for me would require me to buy a ton. For 6 chickens this is not feasable. Maybe someone knows of such a feed in the Tennesse/ Alabama area.

Well you could grind your own mix and buy your base in 50# sacks. It isn't rocket science but does take a bit of understanding the ratios so that the final mix has the right amount of protein and minerals to maintain health.

Have you seen this supplier: Countryside Organics. They will have to ship to you but it has everything you are looking for.

I can vouch for Countryside Organics- I've been feeding my laying hens their soy-free organic feed for years. No soy, and I don't believe their food has cotton or canola either.

I thought about making my own, a grinder is pretty expensive too though. I will keep countryside in mind it is a bit cheaper than H&H where I have been getting my chick starter from.

A grinder is an investment in your self sufficiency goals. At least that is what I tell the Warden when I buy a new tool. And I do the cooking around here so a grinder to me was a needed tool. I did get a very good one and it was pretty pricey but it will be there for my grandchildren's grandchildren unless they sell it for video games or some such nonsense.

For 6 chickens, a $30 Corona will do fine. Somewhere around 15 chickens, though, you start looking at the big expensive ones. DOn't ask me how I know this.

Yeah I thought about getting one when I used to bake a lot of bread. Now I don't eat any grains & I feel better for it. I do have a burr grinder for coffee I wonder how much grain that could process?

You don't need a grinder for grown chickens, they can eat the grains whole.
