awaken at 3AM

Well, I had my first frightening experience as a chicken owner. I often wake around 3AM to do some work on my computer (single FT dad and business owner). As I was sitting here I heard my chickens making a lot of noise, so out I go to see what's going on. First thing that hit me was a smell, not the normal smell, but something different that almost turned my stomach. I walked into the coop (which is pretty secure) and checked on my girls. They were fine, but just as I was walking out and saying good night, I heard this scream like I have never heard before. I thought it might be one of my girls and then again... needless to say I let out a frightened yell of my own (I'm sure my neighbor will be over in the morning to laugh).

I then decided to leave the outer door to the coop open to let whatever it was out and I watched from the house. It was about cat size and had blue eyes that glowed when I put the flashlight on it. It screamed again and my dog started barking. It's gone now, my girls are fine, but I am afraid to go to sleep now. Will increase perimeter security during the day.

Not sure anything could actually get at my girls, but I don't want to take a chance. Terrible experience.

could be a coon. if so you got very lucky that you still have your girls. i'd set a live trap if i were you. bait it with marshmallows.
