I just have to say, after my third time using this for chicks and using it once for butterflies I absolutely love this thing! Now it would not be safe to put chicks in outside, and we have a box brooder with hardware cloth for that. And although it's large it's not as big as this. But we don't keep our chicks out there anyway. For the first few weeks we keep them in our front living room. And then we move them to a very secure screen porch. So the fact that this is not predator proof does not matter. But I find myself using it instead of the other box now because it has so much room and it's so easy to get in and out of from the side or the top. And the greatest thing is the screen keeps everything contained. No mess at all! I put an old shower curtain on the bottom as a barrier and put pine shavings and DE on top of that. This past time I kept my mama and her nine babies in there comfortably! And I got it on Amazon for 22 bucks on sale! And it folds up so small you can stash it in any cabinet when you don't need it.

Interesting. How easy is it to reach down into to catch the chicks? If I were to use this, I'd want to catch the chicks every evening to check for pasty butt and lay down a fresh layer of puppy pee pads. I don't use shavings because of the dust.

When I do that I open the side door and sit down next to it and they run up cuz I'm mama! But when I had my mama hen and her chick's in there it was a different scenario lol! But you still have the top door and the side door.
