We live in the woods in northern michigan with racoons, bears, bobcats, coyotes, etc. We are new to chickens and just built our play pen style coop/run. I was going to do an electric fence around the coop but found this instead.
So far it has scared off hen turkeys on 3 occations, 1 racoon in the middle of the night and 1 owl that i happen to be watching out the window as it flew down and perched on a pine stump behind the coop.

The alarm is the ryobi tech 4 motion sensing alarm. homedepot for 35 bucks. it has a rechargeable battery that last for 21 days continuous, comes with charger, is pretty loud, has a remote so you can arm and disarm from the house, water proof, huge range and when hung low enough to shoot under the hen house nothing can get within 10 feet of any side of my 4x16 coop, it has 2 modes chirp, and alarm.

We set it at night when we close the coop door and turn it off in the morning when we open it up. best 35 bucks we spent!!!
Thought i would share this great use for a great product.

Thank you for sharing this ...I will get one for sure.

So, it just makes noise, then?
No electric shock, no flying spikes of predator death? Nothing like that?

Lol...yep just makes noise. But so far everything that is standing there when it goes off runs off pretty fast and the alarm continues for 2 minutes then resets. Our coop is 110 feet from our house and we can hear it go off with the windows closed and tv on. We also have a spot light that shines on the coop. So when it goes off we see critters running away.

Which means, to me, that they had ample opportunity to come in that close. Are there any possibilities for perimeter defenses?

Yep they can get in close....but they can only be close to the coop for a few seconds before the alarm goes off doing 2 things. Hopefully scaring it away and letting me know something is there. Either that something runs off fast, or I shoot it, or I scare it away if I can't shoot it.
So for me that gives me some security and tells me when I need to come save my chickens ;)

I'm also hoping I built my coop strong enough that something could not get thru the coop and into the closed up hen house before the alarm goes off and I can get out there.
For 35 bucks it is the best defense system I have found so far.
