I'm new to the site (as a member) but I have visited this site frequently over the past 3 years. I have 2 chickens that are family pets, as well as a fabulous source of eggs for my family. We live in a somewhat of a rural setting with a cow pasture directly behind our property. Rats haven't been much of an issue in the past. A few here and there, but nothing that some traps, .22 couldn't manage. This spring is a totally different story. They seem to be EVERYWHERE. We are still trying to use the traps, but they seem to be eluding it. I was reading about the bucket with seeds and a "ramp" leading to the top...does this really work for rats or just for mice and other small rodent pests? I don't want to get rid of my chickens but the rats are at a point that I'm actually considering it if I can't get it under control. I have 2 small children age 6 and 4 and I just cannot take any chances. Advice, input, suggestion and comments welcome! Thanks! (BTW, I have a Buff Orpington named Marigold and a Rumpless Auracana named Farrah) Love my chickens!

I don't know if the bucket method works for rats, they are smarter than mice and much bigger. Maybe you can search the predator threads.

from New Mexico!

I have pack rat issues as well. Mine have not learned to stay out of the traps, thankfully. I have heard that they are indeed learning how to avoid traps.

If all else fails, then do your best to keep them out of the coop. Don't leave any food or water out over night. I thoroughly clean up after my birds each night and remove all water so the mice and rats are not throwing parties all night. LOL

Good luck and I hope you come up with a solution. :-)

Enjoy the forums!

Thanks for the input everyone. I will be making some modifications over the weekend and see what kind of progress I can make.
