I like tmhe ayam cemani breed but wondering if they are good for families? My kids are from 17 to 8. I googled it and they seem to be but thought I'd ask here. Also how are they with heat and cold. Here our summers can be hot (last week was upper 90's with heat index of 110 and lows at night in the 70's) and winters can be cold some days could be zero degrees with negative wind chills or like last winter was kind of unseasonably warm like upper 20'sto upper 30's maybe even low 40's during day and down to single digits at night.

They're just overpriced chickens. I wouldn't reccomended them. The gene pool has gotten very shallow in the U.S, since they were a craze a few years back and everyone bred the heck out of them. It's hard to good good ones.

The roosters are very aggressive, I’ve had Ayams for six years now and every single rooster has been vicious, actively stalking me and jumping from trees onto me . The hens on the other hand are sweet and make amazing mothers and are great with people . I find they make great layers , I have one hen since I began raising ayams and she still lays almost daily.

Are you breeding your own lines because a lot of aggression is genetic.

In my experience, Ayams are quite heat hardy. When other birds in the flock are panting and hiding in the shade, they're the ones still sunbathing. They're tough little birds, I think they would be able to withstand a wide range of temperatures. The hens are great for families and children, but I've heard mixed opinions on the roosters. It's probably more of an individual thing with the roosters, where proportionately within the breed, a lot of them are jerks but some may not be.

I have no experience myself, but every one I've seen online is either standoffish, or kind of mean.

If you can get your coop and run in deep shade (like under a tree canopy), that should take some of the summer heat off the birds, in which case I'd highly recommend Black Australorps. They do quite well in heat (with help) and cold, and the friendliness is unmatched! A lot of people will also recommend Buff Orpingtons, but they do have more meat on them, which means they'll struggle a bit more in the heat.

That is good to know. We don't want roosters but still good to know.

We already have a black australorp and I'm thinking to get a brahma and a maran soon. These I just like the looks of but might just not go with atleast right now since they are a popular breed.

That is good to know. I think I'm leaning away from them and may go with a brahma and maybe a zombie.
