Hello everyone, I posted earlier about a chicken that I believe was egg-bound and it burst. I have been giving her calcium citrate for the last few days and saw a yellowish discharge today. So, I was encouraged to give her amoxicillin. I do not have any, nor can I find it. I was trying to find FishMox/AquaMox and its hard to find and our feed stores are saying they can no longer sell it. I am in a bind. Has anyone used Azithromycin for their chickens? I know antibiotics are all different, and this is one is unopened, from Dec that was treating pneumonia. Thoughts? I am still trying to find a different kind, I am just wondering your thoughts, don't want to lose my girl. Pic in comment

Is it in soluble powder form or in pill form? The individual dose of azithromycin is 20mg per kg of body weight. Pill form would be easier to dose one chicken.

Soluble powder is mixed differently, but is impractical to dose one chicken.

It is a good antibiotic for this issue. Probably give it for seven to ten days.

@casportpony could you check my calculation?

It's liquid. Will that work?

Yes. That makes it easy to measure out the proper dose in a syringe. If you need a reminder how to safely syringe liquid, here's a photo to show where the syringe is placed in the throat. It must be the chicken's right side.

Ok, thank you so much for the reminder. Is the dose still 20mg per lb? That seems like a lot...

Apparently I only had a 3 day supply of the azithromycin, so I need to get something else. All the websites I look at for aquamox is at least 5-7 days out. So, I will buy some, but I also need something for now. The only thing I can find locally is erythromycin. So I am going now to get that, do you think it would be ok? I know I might seem like such an irresponsible chicken owner, but I really do care for them, and I feel bad for not being more prepared.

Do you have a fish store in your town? It will be more expensive than ordering, but abx could be picked up today from them.
