I hatched out 5 B/B/S Ameraucanas (so exciting!) and they are adorable. I'm just not sure what's going on with their coloration. I have one that is obviously black, and two that are obviously blue, but two others have got me confused. One is much larger than its hatchmates, and a similar blue to the other two but with patchy coloration (possible splash?). One is incredibly pale, almost yellow! This is my first time hatching B/B/S so I'd love some insight. I was expecting three fairly obvious colorations, and instead it seems like I've got 4. :idunno

From left to right, the black, the pale one, the two obvious blues, and then front and side shots of the giant mottled chick.

Typical black, typical splash, typical blue, typical blue, blue, not typical but not real uncommon either.
Blues can vary quite a bit and that includes down color.
I've had chicks that looked black be blues. Chicks that looked splash be blue and everything in between.

Thank you! That's what I had figured at first, but watching that big one get splotchier threw me. It will be interesting to see how they feather out once they get their adult plumage in. (So far, the light-colored one has got the palest little wing feathers!) It's like a little surprise box of birds!

And that "not typical" blue is like twice as big as everyone else, it's wild.

I just thought I'd update this now that they're older! The black is black, the typical blues and atypical blue all seem to be blue, and the pale one isn't feathering in splash at all but looks like a lavender -- very, very, very pale blue-ish color and no dark edges on the feathers, no white feathers, either.

Here you can see her with two of the other blues! It's crazy. I'm not sure, maybe she will grow in some splash later.

Edit - Okay, a friend of mine says she may not feather in with any splash until after her first molt. Interesting! (I have obviously never had splash before.)
