B.Y.C. Dorking Club!

Ok, I'm wondering if anyone's gotten weights on their adult silver greys?

I'm just curious to see how far from the standard the breed is.

also taking opinions...

knowing size and type are most important while color, feet and comb are down the list... what would you do if you have a hen that's #4 in size out of 18 girls, but is badly duckfooted (even her extra toes point down and somewhat forward)? I don't know if she was born that way or if it's injury, since one of the extra toes looks like the joint was dislocated somewhat, but both sides are very similar.

she's on the upper side of the bell curve, for size and type tho. largest to smallest, the girls span about 1 pound in difference.

I've got a swap Saturday and taking the culls with me. (not really culls, since they have been my breeding birds, but the younger generation (2012 hatch) seems to be about .25 pounds heavier overall than the previous years' hens (2011 hatch).

Ki4got what incubator do you use?

I have 4 hovabators, with added fans. turners in 3, the 4th is hatching only.

why? if it's in regards to the duck footed girl i'm asking about, she came from mcmurray/Patterson lines, I've had her for going on 3 months or so.

I am trying to figure out what incubator to get. I got a pair of SGs and the pullet has an awful upper reapitory infection that may end up being MG. They were given to me for my 4-H project and I am thankful but I just got rid of mareks out of my flocks. ( A good example how necessary quarantine is ) They are in quarantine but I have had a hard year a far as poultry goes. So I am thinking I may just hatch my own. But I am clueless as far as what incubator to get. I am just wondering.

Aren't the hovsbators styrofoam? I heard those are hard to sanitize.

Sorry for bothering ya and getting off topic.

Brinsea is a good maker...several models to choose from and easier to sanitize with Oxine...Just in case you don't already know this....Marek's can remain on a property for years, so make sure your day old chicks you hatch get vaccinated their first day. Marek's infected dander can travel via wind for quite a ways too. Also, if you decide to bring older stock into your property, make they were vaccinated as chicks.

not really... I use a brush to clean it with soap and water, then spay down with water/bleach mix and let it dry.

besides, for the cost, if you have to replace the whole Styrofoam body every 2 years, it's paid for itself. LOL I don't use the water reservoirs, but keep the water for hatching in a bowl on top of the wire, line the bottom with paper towels, and cleanup's a cinch. I don't clean the incubators themselves often, just the hatcher. unless I have a stinker, then it gets sanitized good.

I have 3 Hovabator Genesis, 2 for setting and 1 for hatching. I run mine (bottoms, trays, wire floor) through the dishwasher after gentle scrubbing w/ disinfectant, and then I spray w/ 70% rubbing alcohol once dried. The top and turners get vacuumed, wiped down with a diluted disinfectant on a clean rag, and also sprayed w/ alcohol once air dried. This seems to work out fine for keeping things sterile as I never have bacteria related hatching issues such as naval illness.

...and NEVER use bleach on a styro bator... it will literally eat the styro away over time
