Hey Hatch Bud -

I believe RC to be the dominant gene, based on the reading I've done... so I would assume that RC would always show up then
idunno.gif
- we will have to wait for the Great Dorking Council to speak on this one, as I am only a newbie and learning myself...

Well, I'm certainly not a member of the Dorking Council (maybe some day...) but RC is dominant. Unless the male you use happens to carry SC, you will get all RC chicks on the first generation (F1). Because these chicks will all carry SC, you will see some combs that look flat, bulgy, rough, etc. If you mate these back to the Male, you will again get all RC, only half of which will now carry SC. If you mate them back to the hens, you will get half single and half rose, all of which will carry SC. If you mate brothers and sisters from you F1 generation, you will get a 3 RC to 1 SC ratio.

You can do a Punnett with RC being completely dominant and SC being completely recessive.

Hope that helps.

Yes, exactly the info I needed... thanks!

Question about the, "...some combs that look flat, bulgy, rough, etc." Are you saying that although they will have RC, they will look a little different that homozygous RC?

I'm so glad to have gotten this info. My favorite black dorking hen has a RC that I'm sure is a result of carrying the gene for a SC. I thought she just had an odd comb, but I'm sure now it's the genes. I'm glad, because I'd like to bred her to a SC and get more SCs.

How many did you set?

We's love to see pics of your Reds! Take pictures and post them!!!

Where did you get the eggs?

I'll take some new pics tomorrow... supposed to be sunny here.

I got my eggs from Dick Horstman -- I set 30 of his & 20ish of mine.... lost count because I set over 100 eggs Saturday! I've been having major hatching issues, so I'm hoping these will hatch better! I also just upgraded incubators.

The combs that seen with a cross are different because the Dorking RC has a different shape than the Wyandotte. I'm still sure that there is a difference and it looks to me like your hens could be (probably might be?) Heterozygous.

Good luck!

Oh - very interested in seeing what his birds look like! Have come across his name more than once for nice reds.

Hi all,

I've seen Dick Horstman name all over BYC but have had no luck finding a way to reach him. I am really wanting Red Dorkings and have been working on getting them for about 3 years now. I have Silver/Greys and like them fine but I fell for the Reds while at Jamestown, VA and it seems those birds really wanna become part of my flock.

Thanks,

Dave
