Babe the Fawn *NEW PICS!*

It would be more than obvious if this were a baby buck...this is a doeling, folks...for sure. Even if it were a buck, it wouldn't be putting on 'horn buds' (like goats) this young anyway.

Emzy...if I'd been the one to find this, I'd do exactly what your dad did. I know lots of folks out there would advise "letting nature take its course" (i.e., mama dies, baby dies), but....meh, screw that.

Maybe it's wrong, but seeing a helpless baby deer in the middle of the road is just an impossible situation. Like I said, I'd have taken it in too.

I'll tell you this, though...deer STINK. Even the does. I've killed a buck and a doe (hunting, humanely...one shot, straight drop), and though the girls don't stink as bad as the boys..they do stink. I actually had to pull what looked to be a yearling doe out of a roadside fenceline once and...dude...she REEKED. I had to wash my hands A LOT to get it off..

So, just keep that in mind.

Something else...if you're planning to keep her on your other property, remember that she's a herd animal. Right now, you're the herd. If you drop her off over there with no companions, she's going to go apeshizzle trying to find you.. You might consider getting a little wether goat for her and introducing them now, then keeping them together on the other place.. Even if she hops a fence, the wether probably can't, so she'll most likely come back.

Another something else (

)...some deer "hunters" are sick individuals. Deer killers is a better term. Some would laugh and thank you for putting a hunter orange collar on her because it made the shot easier. Most probably wouldn't, but some would, and it only takes one.

If I were you, and I kept her, I'd put her on LOCKDOWN during open season.

Ok..I'm done now.

Good job with her, though...she looks healthy and happy.

Just to clear up a few things. Deer do not have horns, they have Antlers, which they lose in early winter, They regrow them every year.

Reason a fawn of this age has no buds on his head, he does not start growing them to much later.

Another fact a buck fawn, also does fawn will breed at 5 months old.

Deer stink?? only when in the rut, and does when they come into season.

Thats in the late fall.

2 day ago a fawn was on my road, I stop it jump over a fence, mother was standing at the edge of the woods.

Trouble I see every spring when fawn are under 3 days old, people can pick them up, at that age they have no fear. after that first week, good luck catching one.

Unless you see the mother DEAD leave fawns be. If in harm way, like on the road move it to safety. YES the mother will still feed it even if you moved it a 100 yards.

ur calm then!! i would have done A LOT worse than that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I probably shouldnt say on here but i have some ideas and i think itd definitely involve that gun and some feet and hands and well....you get it!

They ask the lady if they were hers, she said no, because she knew it was illegal. She didnt have them penned. So they could not charge her. DNR can and will kill deer, if they feel the need. They are the police over all wildlife matters , really have more power than police. They have the power to come on your land anytime they want, check for traps, wildlife, and etc.

Why would someone want that job if they didn't love animals? They obviously don't if they can do that. They don't even try to find someone who is licensed to have them? I know your not supposed to have 'wild' deer but after they are tamed I don't consider them really wild anymore, how do they think people started the legal deer in captivity or horses or goats or DOGS. I mean one day someone thought "Oh it would be really cool to have this thing as a companion!" or found one just like I did. I think if the person who has a wild deer can care for it right they should be able to keep them maybe with a fine involved otherwise they prob wouldn't earn money. Now I can see if someone found a baby bobcat or cougar why that would be a prob but a doe?

Hard to believe ,but people can love nature and animals , and still be able to kill them. Members on this forum do all the time, and even eat chickens.

Not taking up for them, but they do save the meat. What was so bad they kill them in front of this lady, the buck would have been a danger to humans.

Another thing yes deer are herd animals ,but does will be accept into the wild herd. Bucks would be too after the rut, Like Jan.,or Feb. Deer herd up after the rut, other wise its does with their daughter from the year before. Even those fawn from the year before, half will have fawns themself.

Honestly? I see the reason for them to shoot the deer.

Which is more humane? Slow starvation due to lack of knowledge as to how to survive the rut, social interaction and freezing temperatures? Or a quick shot to the head?

Neutering a male deer...

Good luck finding a veterinarian that will neuter the buck and NOT turn you in.

Would neutering a buck fix the rut?

Yes, you are right. Know people who have, they dont even grow the antlers.

Emzyyy, First most State already have to many deer. Hard to Believe the DNR do what best for the animal in most cases.

Think of it like this. You have enought feed to feed a 100 deer over the winter. That spring say half of the 100 are does, well they have twin fawns, so now you have 200 deer, but only enought feed for 100. If you kill 100 you can feed them all winter. Now if you dont kill any, the feed will run out half way thru winter, how many do you think will starve, alot more than a 100, so come spring you would have very few alive.

One reason for hunting season. The State DNR try to see how much winter food would be there, and adjust the limits on how many can be killed. Nature some winter can be worst than others, so I am sure they have a hard job.

Yes most do love wildlife, alway few bad apples anywhere. Like I said most state have to many deer, and dont need more release, at the same time they dont want people taking them either to be a problem later on. They are trying to protect them from humans robbing nest, taking young, of killing them when they have young to starve.

Sure the state make lots of money from the wildlife.

Well at a young age BEFORE the rut the bucks are not like that yet and the Game people could get the bucks fixed and then turn them loose or take them to someone with deer, anything but just shooting them, their young still and have a chance if it was a male who was uncontrollable killing it would prob be the best solution. Kind of like animal shelters now, when they can't find homes for stray cats they fix them and release them so no more kittens and yes I know they are domesticated animals but still give the buck a break? I'm just giving suggestions I don't think its right.

I'm sure if they shot them it would go to use. They would eat the meat or give the meat to a shelter for homeless people.
