Babies afraid of Fudge-proof feeder?

Fudge has a terrible fondness for scratching in the food dish. I made a Fudge-proof feeder (basically a cardboard cube with two holes that sits over the dish) and felt very clever, but they won't use it. Do they just need to get used to it, or is there something about it that offends their chickie sensibilities?

Is it dark inside so they really can't see the food unless they get close to it?

I would start out with another one or a different cover where they can see the food and then gradually make the holes smaller.

I had a couple chicks that loved to scratch everything.
