I have an 8 week old Banty with both eyes swollen shut. There are no other symptoms such as sneezing or coughing or any pus from the eye. But they are red and irritated when you open the eyelids. We have used Vet RX thinking it was worm eye but we can't physically see a worm. We can see in each eye what looks like a white dot and I was actually able to get one out of the corner of the eye and it feels hard. I thought at first it might be a worm dried and curled up but I just can't tell even with a magnifying glass. I can try to post a picture but I'm not sure you can see it well enough to tell. We are continuing the Vet RX but it's been 2 weeks and no sign of improvement. She is separated from the other chicks.

Only use eye ointment or eye drops in eyes, nothing else!!! Rinse them out with warm, not hot water, and at least use artificial tears ointment, which is OTC and soothing; better yet, take her to the vet and get the right eye medication for her. Eye problems really hurt, and can result in blindness! Mary

Thank you. We will try that and we don't have a Vet near us that wil see a chicken.

Photos will be helpful - also any photos of what you are getting out of the eye.

As suggested earlier - flush with saline, remove any debris you can find, then apply an ophthalmic ointment like Terramycin eye ointment or Vetericyn eye gel to the eyes.

While you're at it, look inside her beak for any obstruction - especially in the chonal slit - see photos in the following link: http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1074036/sinus-infections
