Baby chick being pecked on neck

That sounds good. Hopefully they will stop picking on her. Chick feathers usually grow in pretty quickly. Iodine works well to color wounds, and there is a product called Alushield or aluspray that many feed stores sell. Those are aluminum sprays to coat wounds for healing. With chicks, sometimes a red light bulb helps them sleep better without pecking. Unfortunately most of the red lights are 250 watts. When they do not need heat any more about 6 weeks of age, you can use a red 25 watt fluorescent light if you wish that puts out no heat, but gives a little light .

If you want to spend about $8, places like Petsmart or Petco sell lower wattage infrared red bulbs. Those put the heat out and are found in 100 watt and 75 watt sizes. Much better for small enclosures.

I have never seen those at Petco here. Can you post a link? The only ones I have seen since they took most of the incandescent light bulbs is at Premier 1 animal supply, and theirs are 125 watts I believe. Just a few years ago I could buy 60 watt red incandescent bulbs at Lowes or Walmart. Now they are fluorescent 25 watt bulbs that produce no heat. I have even checked electric supply companies without success.

Looks like they quit carrying the infrared. Petco that is. I wonder why? I have bought them at PetSmart just last year. Infrared is the best. Just the colored red incandescant don't put out as much heat, imo.

WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH REGULAR LIGHT BULBS?

Back in 50's thru 80's that is what we used to heat the brooder.

It was wooden 6ft by 6ft using 1"x12" umber.

using a thin wood board over /2 of the top,

an then I kept heavy bath towel over the front half.

the light bulbs were enough to keep 99 dgees first week,

and then down in light bulb size.

or are you talking about some thing else?

I have the 250 but it barely hitting 80 with the wind and cold weather..(I know I'm in ga but we southerners can't deal with cold weather much!..lol) they are in the coop in their pen and I have a moving blanket around it to try and keep out the drafts..so on Friday since it will be in the high 60's...maybe this bipolar weather is why I'm sick. Blah!

The Premier 1 Supplies bulbs are 175 watt infrared and cost $14 for 2 plus shipping. I have used red incandescent when less heat was required and they put out as much heat as a normal white bulb. I always used a thermometer under the light to regulate temps though.
I have experimented in the past with red, white, and yellow bulbs, and my chicks were much more calm with red. I always start wirh the infrared 250 with brand new chicks, but they are just too warm after a week or so. So then I keep a 100, 60watt, and 40 to change as needed.
When they stopped manufacturing the larger wattage bulbs, I stashed several boxes in my barn.
