Hi, someone please help me.. My polish chick hatched less than 24 hours ago but can't seem to stand up! He/she seems very sleepy compared to the rest of the chicks. I've picked it up and can't see any visible injuries.. I've also touched the legs and doesn't seem to be in any pain, can just barely move or put any weight on her legs from the elbow down. Not sure what to do? Or if there is anything we can do?

Welcome to BYC!

Sorry about your baby. Sometimes they can be a bit weak right after hatching. You might put some sugar in her water to help boost the blood sugar. 2 Tablespoons of sugar per quart of water. Dip her beak in it every hour to make sure the chick is drinking it. You might also separate this one from the rest of them so she doesn't get trampled. Give this one a few degrees more heat than you normally would. Somewhere around 98 or 99 degrees to keep warm. If you can get her to eat, hard boiled eggs are excellent to help weak babies. If you have any liquid vitamins like sav-a-chick, this can help as well.

You can also post this in our Raising Chicks section of the forums for more help...

Good luck with this little baby and keep us posted!

Thanks for your advise! Will give it a go, hopefully will help! I've had a look online for sav-a-chick but as I live in England don't think I'll get hold of any! Isit just a liquid vitamin for chickens?

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your chick, hope it recovers. TwoCrows gave you some good advice, If you can't get Save-A-Chick etc liquid human baby vitamins like Poly-Vi-Sol (without iron) work also, usual recommendation seems to be to just give the chick a drop or so twice a day.

Thanks! Will see what I can find! Although I'm now not sure that it's a weak chick! She still seem sleepy compared to the rest but seems more aware, lifting her head up, chirping, and wriggling around, just can't seem to use her legs!
