Looks like a Spitz to me! Silver Spangled is the type you have. That is the most common type in the US and especially with hatcheries. She looks gorgeous! You said MyPetChicken.com? That's a Cackle bird and will look pretty good for a hatchery Sptiz IMO. They imported 3 roosters and some hens from Europe last year and I see the big improvement in their program with this hatching season for sure! You got lucky and she'll be a good hen for you. They lay thru out winter months and produce better than the websites say in my opinion! Most people get large or medium eggs. Yes the roosting early and the boldness in this breed is incredible compared to other types of birds, especially American heritage breeds. I see Spitz taking a little longer to fully mature than American Heritage breeds but I also see them develop "chicken" habits much sooner. I have my 4 week olds roosting and acting like my 8 week old Heritage breeds for sure!

how do you know this about Cackle? I'd sure like to read more info on their hatchery since I live a couple hours away and
will most likely do most of my orders through them. I'm looking forward to lots of chickens in my future.

Yes of course! I have PLENTY of people inquire into my words about Cackle's breeding program. It says so on their website:

"Cackle Hatchery imported 3 breeding roosters of the Appenzeller Silver Spangle Spitzhaubens in 2013 to improve and work on our breeding program. Traditionally in the states most Spitzhaubens have the crest going backward and too much of a crest. Cackle Hatchery would like to be instrumental in correcting this breeding issue with our own flock and hope others follow."

And I have personally spoken to two of their representatives that have attested to that fact. I prefer to get birds from being a member of the Appenzeller Spitzhauben Society but as for hatcheries I would chose Cackle over ALL of them! The birds that I have got from Cackle this year have been very good examples so far of the breed, amazingly the crest seem to be correct so far and with time I'll see what he hackle and the rest of the bird turns out. The legs are satisfactory and that's usually a big mistake with hatchery birds.
