Baby Chick Pictures!!!!! POST!

My black Australorps started hatching this morning, those eyes get me every time

Cheering on the hatch of another egg

Finally out look at that big boy

resting a bit and staring at me with those big eyes
OH MY GOSH!! How cuuuute! I wish I could hatch my own eggs but I can't justify spending $200 on something I'd only use once or twice. I think I'm just going to wait for one of my girls to go broody and sneak an egg or two under her.

Congrats on your hatch!!
I know! Would love to have a whole flock of her. Sadly, she and PJ will be the only ones of that pairing. Olaf, their father, died protecting his flock when coyotes attacked.
I wouldn't mind having a whole flock of her either! Oh no.. I am so sorry about Olaf. What a great roo, died a hero. Something about hearing roosters sacrifice their own life
in the name of their flock/love breaks my heart but makes me smile. Such sweet and selfless creatures.. I don't know many male animals that instead of immediately eating what they've found, would call over their girls then eat whatever's left after all the good stuff is gone.
My first live baby chick, raised in a blue car hatchery!
Aww! Even from far away he/she looks like a fluffball. Momma looks so proud! Congrats!
Those are super cute!!! I'm personally going to get a black sex link, but I'm also going to get at least one or two more, one of those will be picked by my friend. She lives in the city, in an apartment, but loves birds so I'm going to raise a chicken for her. I'll be sure to upload some pictures when I get them.

Why thank you! I love them dearly! My three Black Sex Links are the SWEETEST chickens I have - even sweeter than me Easter Egger's, Australorp, Wyandotte, Araucana, Cuckoo Marans, and Silkies. I'm not kidding! They come when called and routinely jump up on me to nap. Sometimes it's a bit much as I'm bent over, pulling weeds and they all try to jump on my back! They love to be held and follow me around the yard. They are seriously like little black Labradors! I would not trade them for the world! Those three and my Barred Plymouth Rock turned out to be the sweetest. My only complaint is the Black Sex Links can be a little feisty when it comes to other birds and sometimes will actively chase my other girls to peck on them. It's gotten much better now though so it's something that can be fixed - at least in my case.
1 day old bantam cochins
I want Cochins so, so bad! Nowhere near me has them though! They are all so adorable and I love the variety of colors you have! Mama is also gorgeous!

What cute baby chicks!! Just waiting on my girls to have some more. 3 broody hens sitting on about a dozen eggs.
I'm sure you were talking to all of us, but thanks! I'm so excited for you!! What breeds are they incubating?! Good luck and please come back to post pictures!

More pictures of my sweet little babes. I'm a tad.. okay, okay - tremendously obsessed with these three. Secret Hills Ranch, poultry operator (lol) Kaylee, told me that she was going to send my second batch that I ordered after these one's (I was just so happy with them) on Wednesday. Well, I noticed my birthday is this Tuesday (yay, 23!) so I asked her if she could send my Splash Isbar, Blue Copper Marans, and 2 Curits Hale Cream Legbars (one she's giving to me as a packing peanut) this Monday so I could get them on my birthday. She said she'll try.. but I hope they come on time because I don't know what would be a better gift than getting baby chicks!

Here's a few more pictures of my three little stooges. They're too young to take outside right now so I apologize if all pictures are similar since they are in their brooder.

^ Left to right: Esmé, Iris, and Eden.

^ They have grit because I've been taming them by feeding them 1/4 inch tiny baby crickets with tweezers.
I've only had them since Wednesday, but they run towards my hands now! I also attribute placing their brooder in my room to that.

^ Esmé is the sleepiest one out of the bunch. She/he is CONSTANTLY knocked the heck out and usually is the one that has me laughing from all the impossibly "comfortable" positions she finds herself in. The orange water is Save-A-Chic Electrolytes and some shavings that found their way in. I like to supplement them with it for the first week that they're home just in case. I'll probably keep all chicks that were mailed to me on it for 2 weeks as the process of coming here was definitely harsh on their little bodies.

^ It finally occurred to me to raise their food and water bowls. Today is also the first day that I've introduced them to fermented starter feed mixed with Chickie Puffs (musca domestica, wheat, corn, alfalfa, etc.). So far.. no good. They all won't touch it. I hope tomorrow is better since they'd be hungry by then! All my other girls are in love with their fermented grower feed!

^ Oh my gosh, Esmé's face is like "Ma.. really? You're so annoying.. Can a chick get some sleep around here?!"

^ Everyone awake! As always, Esmé is unimpressed, Iris in the back is always doing her own thing, and Eden in the middle could care less!

@Exotica I had given Olaf to my brother to start his flock because he and my other roo, Johann, weren't getting along very well. For a while he was an only chicken and became my brother's baby. One day a dog came into their yard and Olaf came running up from clear across the yard and put himself between the dog and my brother and nephew. Little silkie roo standing off with a dog 10 times his size to protect a grown man and a 3 year old. He was a good boy and I miss him.

That is so sweet!

Went out today to check on momma and baby chick and they were out of the nursery, well I panicked because I didn't know what was going on. Did she move, did one of the other critters get it? Well, she only took the baby foraging for food.

Oh my gosh... my heart! What a sweet, sweet boy. May he rest in peace and be reunited with you at Rainbow Bridge. Wow.. I am speechless. That is so incredibly selfless.. he loved you guys so much! He must've had a a wonderful life and was spoiled! I can almost see the scene in my head and although it is incredibly sad, it is also amazing. People that don't have chickens as pets don't understand how special they are. Someone in my flock is starting to crow and I told myself that I wouldn't go out of my way to get a roo but if one ended up in my flock, I'd have to buy the "no-crow" collar and keep him! I hope mine is as loyal as yours!

I would panic too! Especially since I haven't had a broody hen with chicks! What a good mama she is! What is baby? A mix?

Not sure what momma is to know about baby. But only my RIR/white leghorn seems actively engaged with my girls. My white Sussex just started crowing and I've not seen him active at all!

That's exciting! Mama is a mystery so you have to patiently wait for baby to grow up to know how she/he looks like.. makes it even more interesting!! Do you have close pictures of mama? She is gorgeous!!

For the short life he led it was a charmed one. My cousin rescued him and Johann from a straight run bin at Atwood. They were the only two Silkies and she just had to have them. When they turned out to be roos, I took them because I wanted at least one roo for my little flock and I loved the look of her other silkies. I had him for almost a year then my brother took him. He really kind of liked being an only chicken. He was rather stand of fish to me but Kyle could hold him and the crazy bird would even find a clump of grass to fall asleep on and Kyle would have to go get him to put him in the coop for the night. He did enjoy the girls when they were added. They were only about 6 weeks old but Kyle said he would look out for them and take them to all the good treat spots.

Exoctica
