Well, while I wasn't doing much the other day with having a severe allergic reaction to what the dr said is Fire Ant bites, I brought my chicks in in 3 batches to mark them, make notes and take pics! Took most of the day - sheese! Did the first 4 Blue ameraucanas, then the 2nd batch of Blue's then my Barnyard Chicks (mixed breeds - but all hatched either yellow w/ yellow/orange beaks and shanks or with combo beaks and shanks. Some will be Banty sized (not sure what varieties yet) and at least 2 look to be from my larger hens).
Added - when the chicks get older/larger, I plan to switch to zip ties for marking them. Will keep the original marks noted in my word doc, before I add the zip ties. I want to track them as they feather out and develop into pullets or cockrels. The roos will be separated - most will probably go into freezer, though I am considering keeping one or two blue boys maybe...
My 20 chicks have survived their first two weeks and guess what....I'm still alive
!
First we have Bandit. I call him this because he/she was the first to figure out how to sit on the
perch. Claim to fame? Pecks the head of every chick that goes under the perch.
needless to say hubby raised the perch.
White crested Polish #2 is Bandits accomplice I call him/her Nosey: claim to fame? he/she likes to peck
the feet of any chick setting on the perch
needless to say hubby raised the perch again.
Now for two of my sweethearts. They are splash cochin I don't know if they are hens or roos but oh so cute =)
This first one I call Plumpy he/she is the largest cochin and comes running every time I put my hand in the
pin to see if I have food!
Finally my favorite (shhh don't tell the others) he/she is like a little buttercup.
timid, shy, and likes to rest in my hand while I pet him/her. I told hubby I don't care
if it turns out to be a roo I'm keeping this one =)
A few snaps of 4 of my babies I thought I would share
Gabby and her little foster girl (sex linked baby). Don't mind the cockerel in the back, he's in solitary. Pics from a few days ago, internet has been intermittent at best.
Gabby did something I find completely unusual. I have food on the ground for the baby, but Gabby will go to the hanging feeder and pull food out and drop it on the ground for the baby to eat. Never seen that before, but last time the Silkies hatched their own babies, I believe the feeders were on the floor. Or at least one was.
Pictures of our chicks exploring the field outside for the first time. There are 14 in total. Two Ameraucanas, two Ideal 236's, two Red Broilers, four Buff Orpingtons and four Black Sex Links (our roos).
They love running around near the fence that partitions our yard and our neighbor's.
These to poked out today! I'm desperate to lift her up to see if anyone else is there...she has 5 egg left to hatch. I have no idea what the gray one is. They were supposed to be all Chantecler (not that I really care)
