Baby Chick Pictures!!!!! POST!

are they cornish cross or dark cornish?   I dont know about the sexable...though I think the cornish cross might be sexable but could be wrong

They just said cornish rock. Who knows what is accurate coming from TSC lol the guy claimed that the red rangers with dots were hens so he gathered up all dotted chicks. The cornish all have small combs except for one so I'm guessing I have at least one cockrel in the bunch. We mostly just want to free range them and let them eat bugs and maybe have a few to out in the freezer when the time comes.

I think I saw you say you were thinking of keeping a few to breed with your purebred rooster to experiment on meat birds? I have a couple dark cornish I plan on working with to cross see how they do for meat birds.....My other half really likes breast meat and the dark cornish suppose to be breasty so we'll see :) I was fairly impressed with the bantam dark cornish chickens I saw at the chicken show...........the bodys were very well developed and muscler/meaty bird in bantam so.. be interested to see how the dark cornish LF fill out

not pet but well handled yes.. I have issues with mean chickens from my childhood s o I like to make su re they are well handled well socialized and can deal with them...no problem with meat birds and handling either..... least I know they had lots of love affection good food and pleasant life before they provide me with life :) and is amix of keepers and meat birds actually.......Dumpling the turkey is ear marked for thanksgiving dinner :)

I guess, but it just makes me feel bad, my family really isn't fit for slaughtering, I just gave up eating meat:P. I'm glad you know to pay attention to how the animal is cared for.

I think and I could very well be wrong sounds like it is a dark cornish crossed with a barred rock chicken but I am no chicken expert on the breed :) anyways I believe I read something about the cornish rock being a dark cornish and barred rock cross was the begining of the cornish cross meat bird breeding program or something

I noticed I have the worst birds for meat, I have silkies and sultans and cochin bantams, I guess that may be a good thing so if I have some they don't go to slaughter, but I think it's funny how just for some reason I like the pet breeds the most.

I think the reason Sultans are rare is because no one thinks they're worth anything because they really don't lay many eggs and they also are terrible for meat.

Why would you gather up all the females if they're for meat? Wouldn't it be best to leave the hens to people who want eggs, and get the roosters for meat?:/ Roosters will be slaughtered (most likely) anyway, so you might as well just get all the roosters you can, raise them, then slaughter them. Instead of slaughtering a bunch of hens. I mean, you're not going to get a chance to get eggs anyway, they'll be slaughtered. Most people want hens so they don't have to slaughter roosters, but you WANT to slaughter them for meat, so, why'd you just choose to take all the hens for meat? Plus, roosters are better for meat.
I just thought that made more sense.

Well, I think most people don't want black meat because it's weird, and silkies are really pets only. At least I don't have to deal with people getting annoyed because I won't sell them chickens for them to butcher as much...?

some believe the black meat has health benefits, helps increase vigor and what not..so isnt thought of as weird at all just different type of meat......have heard they made great birds for stewing... so I guess it's about the flavor as aposed to meat amount

some ppl say they can taste the diff between pullets and cockerels.. and prefere hens over cockerels something about the cockerels having some kind of bitterness to the meat or something.. I have never noticed such
