Hi all, I’m a newbie. I have a chick hatching in incubator for nearly 20 hours now, but there’s a dark blood around the shell (I’ve had eggs hatch before so I know it dosnt look right) chicks breathing but not sure whether to help or leave it??….

The shell or membrane may be a bit thick, you might start a small hole so it can get a better start zipping. Do you have a photo of this egg?

If it's breathing and the shell is sufficiently pipped to continue breathing well, it's best to leave it. When chicks bleed during hatch, it almost always takes them longer because they have to recover from that. If you didn't assist previously, it's likely the chick nicked a vein in the process. You assisting is likely to make it bleed more if any blood vessels are still present. I know it looks scary, but just trust in the chick. Give it at least 24 more hours, I'd say.

You don't want the chick to dry out too much, but you also don't want it to bleed any more than it already has. You could try to gently and carefully peel the membrane, stopping immediately at the first sign of blood. If the veins have receded, you may be able to mostly peel the membranes away from the chick. Don't pull the chick from the egg, let it climb out itself when it's ready. If you still see veins or active bleeding, don't peel the membrane. If it's not ready to have the membrane peeled, and without putting it over the chicks beak or blocking it from breathing, you may want to lay a moist but not dripping paper towel over all that exposed membrane. In its current condition, that chick will not be able to hatch because it will get too dry and stuck in the membranes.

I agree with @Pigeony the chick looks shrink wrapped due to drying out and can't zip out of the egg. You might get a q tip and some warm water and damp water around the edges of the shell where she is stuck. Gently try to pick off the shell where you are wetting it. Don't pick off any shells pieces that are too dry or make the chick bleed. Keep wetting as you go. This will be a slow process but this is probably the only way she can come out.
