We recently got 25 chickens, 2 died from a terrible accident and the other one had a wry neck and ended up dieing. As I was taking pictures of them today of them all huddled together sleeping I seen one chicken with its head up opening and closing its mouth so I picked her up and she made no sound which is unusual because the others always chirp when picking them up. I listened to her as she was opening and closing her mouth and she would make kind of a click sound and I looked into her mouth as she was opening and closing her mouth and her tongue was just rolling back and forth. Any idea what is going on? She seems to be eating and drinking fine and looks healthy and strong, walking around fine but she cant make any sounds other than a click sound and the opening and closing her mouth is starting to scare me because the others did that before they died. I have her on poly-vi-sol with no iron rite now with one drop twice a day, Also I soaked her chicken starter in water and added sugar just in case she ain't getting what she is suppose to and really is having trouble eating but I just haven't noticed yet. I cant afford for her to see a vet and I refuse to cull her. Im new to this and honestly was not prepared for ill/injured chickens but I have learned a lot this week. Anyone else had this problem before or possibly know whats going on? Any help is much appreciated.

Here are some questions to help figure out what is wrong. Good Luck.

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.).

2) What is the behavior, exactly.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?

11) Describe the housing/bedding in use.

12) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
