Hi, we have a new baby chicken and it’s mother abandoned it so we had to take it inside, we have noticed that he walks funny but there’s no defects that we notice (not spraddle or splay leg) and he keeps falling onto his back and has trouble getting on his feet, we also notice he looks like he’s gasping for air sometimes and we’re having trouble feeding him and he keeps crying - we’re not sure if he will make it through the night and we’re super worried now so any advice or help would be great

We were able to stringe feed him water and he has chick food, now he’s asleep and we have a heater on his box, we also put in feather dusters to replace a hen

Pics? It helps to know how old it is. We might be able to tell from pics.

If it's a little baby, you have to get it warm. That's why most babies cry - because they are cold. Make sure the heater is very warm. 95° is recommended for very young chicks.

The other issues are likely a vitamin deficiency (vitamin E, most likely) or neurological. You can get chicken vitamins from a fried store, but vitamin E for humans works, too. Empty a capsule on a small amount if food. It will be a while before you see results.

We had that problem with a young turkey. It died because it had flipped over underneath the heat lamp and overheated. Make sure that doesn't happen. Watch it.
