Baby Chicks 2025 - Chicks are here!

Thank you for telling me about all this! These are great tips for next time! I thought about calling, but I had an unusually busy past few days and didn't get the chance. I'm about 2 hours away from Mt Healthy. The chicks hatched and were sent out early, which is why I'm a bit nervous. If they'd hatched and shipped Sunday as planned, they wouldn't have had to spend as much time at the post office. It will most likely turn out fine, but ordering chicks in the mail is a new experience for me, so it's been a bit stressful as well as exciting. I've waited about a month for them to hatch too, which added to the anticipation. :)
No problem! Any word on them?
Mine were packaged really well so I bet yours will be just fine. I'm excited to see photos! I waited about a month too. It's so hard waiting. I don't know how some people can order months in advance. I'd die, lol.

The email came, and apparently they provided a complimentary thermometer! I already bought one, so I'll return mine, but so far, Mt Healthy is exceeding expectations! The babies are in the same place as last night, the postal service probably closed for Sunday, but from the looks of it, they'll be here tomorrow! On a different topic, there's been a huge run on chicks feed at my local TSC, so I had to get the only feed and size bag that they had, but the babies will have feed until they get restocked, so all is well. Apparently the TSC has been swamped with calls from people saying their chicks died after they got them and are demanding refunds. People are not being very kind to employees either. I heard a young teen yesterday accuse the employees of hiding the chicks. It's especially horrid because the staff there are very helpful if you ask nicely for them to check stock or ask for their opinions. They don't deserve to be treated like an enemy for doing their jobs!

I saw that too but never found mine. To be fair though I'm not the one that picked up/unboxed them so it's quite likely he lost it in that process. I'd wait to return it maybe in case they didn't though. I bought two big bags of chick starter too a few weeks ago, before they started selling chicks here. I haven't been to TSC or our other feed store since, but I did call the other day to see if I could find some more EEs for my neighbor, and they said they've been selling out in like 15 minutes. I'm in super rural SD, and I know it's been this way in other places but I just never imagined it would be the same here. Crazy.

Did you get your babies yet?! :fl

I feel really bad for my neighbor, she's lost two (well technically 3 since they sent an extra) of her Easter eggers now. The two were a bit runty from the beginning it looked like. The one weaker one died on the trip home, and a normal looking one died under the heating pad just like my SLW did. I still feel awful about that bit I've done it so many times and never had anything happen. They really must have just gotten trampled or smothered. Then her other runty EE just died the other day. I kept it back to give it some extra tlc when I gave her the rest of hers the other day when we got back. It was eating and drinking well and not being bullied or anything. I was giving it electrolytes and nutridrench in the water. But it still only had wing feather nubs where the others have full wings. It went downhill and died the night before last. I feel kind of responsible since it was in my care and she had just asked about it. I don't know that there was much else I could have done but I still feel bad. Then she brought over her dark brahma because it was acting weird. It was pretty small too still (they're slower growing though so I don't know that that was abnormal, mine is less feathered than say the RIRs too) and had had pasty butt quite a bit. I don't know if they were cleaning it's bottom often enough. It seemed kind of constipated. It also kept it's eyes closed a lot and was tipping it's head up occasionally almost like wry neck or something neurological. I gave it drops of nutridrench, gave it vitamin E from a capsule every hour, b complex water, egg yolk mixed with corn syrup, and also started tube feeding it egg yolk and kaytee formula yesterday. I've never tubed such a young bird before but I honestly thought it worked great. It got more and more neurological looking last night, and shockingly actually made it to this morning but wouldn't walk or open it's eyes, it just slept with its head drooped. I got up early and tubed her again, but she just died. I wonder if she got dropped or something. I don't know what happened. I'm dreading telling her because it was one of their favorites. I feel so bad. They're trying really hard and doing a good job but she does have two little kids under 7 that have been holding them a lot. I just wonder if something happened to it. Maybe even without her knowing. I haven't had anything of mine die besides that SLW in the car. Mine all seem super big and healthy and lol great. I feel like I should give her my dark brahma, but I was really excited about her too. I don't know what to do.
Should I say something to the hatchery about the EEs? I don't know if they'd cover something a few days later especially after all of the unusual stress I had to put them through.

They arrived! I got 2 extras, an extra buff and an extra EE.

We have a perfect dozen now.

So cute, thanks for the photos! My splash laced red looks a lot like the bird on the right in your first photo. How is their lacing coming in? Cool our birds could be related! I absolutely lovey buff orp too. She's the sweetest little thing.
She actually doesn't have any lacing yet, she is my slowest grower but I'll post a pic once she grows more!

I will say that one of my blue olive eggers is much smaller than the others and she has balancing issues. She mostly turns right but shes eating and drinking and growing. I've been giving her poultry cell (it has vit B, E, and thiamine) but she's still wobbly.
