Baby Chicks! - Are they suppose to be this way?

I do find my silkies are much less active than other breeds. Give her time. She may just be a regular silkie, or she may not be feeling the best. My silkies are a week old tomorrow and are still not as active as the other breeds.

They all made it through the 1st night. Phew! They're all just just hanging out together right now. The thing is, she's not the only silkie I got. The other one was eating, drinking, darting around, alert - just as much as the SLW and faverolle. Maybe she's the exception?? On a side note, the SLW is like a little momma to the silkies and the faverolle is not at all timid and shy like how MPC describes the breed to be - interesting.

Gift - what kind of probiotics do you get? Can I get it at TSC?

I've found grit to be the best cure for pasty butt. Just plain old sand is great. Probiotics are nice, but if they're not drinking then they won't get any of it. You can try to poke their little beaks in the water and see if it "gets it." I've had a chick here and there be pretty slow about picking up on that.

Thank you everyone! Just want to let you all know that my blue silkie (Sprinkles) is now doing great. She's eating, drinking, and interacting with the other girls (Cupcake, Talullah, and Charlotte). :D

My first batch of 6 chicks are now 3 1/2 weeks old. I had 1 EE that was similar to your Silkie. Didn't seem to be as active as the others. Not eating as much , not drinking as much and sleeping much more. I actually prepared my kids that she may not make it. After 2 days she was great. I think 1st timers, like myself, get really nervous really quickly. Forums like this with much more experienced people really help.

On the advice of an Organic Chicken Farmer friend of mine, I did/do 1 Tablespoon ACV to 1 Gal of water. Nothing else and I do non-medicated Organic Chick Starter.Grower. So far so good. Growing like weeds and did not have any pasty butt issues. They will go out to the Coop & run permanently on Sunday.
