I am new to raising chickens and I am wondering how often to change the shavings in my brooder? They don't seem to be dirty enough to change but I am just wondering what people with some experience do. Thanks for the help!

When they start to stink, put a fresh layer on top. Continue doing this when they smell. Once the smell does not go away, then dump the entire brooder into the compost pile and start fresh. Super easy and congrats on your new babies!! Feel free to visit my blog. There a lot of helpful info there. Take lots of photos, because they grow like lightening!!

I put paper towels under bedding or you could use newspaper they will scratch it up but then you can roll or pick up sections to throw out easier. Also I mix some hay in it helps with keeping the dust down and gives them something to scratch through. I pick out any nasty poo when I see it too, usually right away in the morning.

Good mornin everyone!!!

we have 8 little chicks 4 RIR, 2 barred rocks and 2 bantams, they are 6-8 weeks old, I was just wondering at what age can I start to add straw and sawdust. it sure seems that they want some or at least thats what I think. they are all trying to dust themselves. is there something that would work better?

thanks Ray
