baby chicks dieing

Newbie chicks need heat for NO Less than 4 weeks of the first stage of life.Sadly I lost one last night with a bantam I had gotten from TSC about 3 week's ago.A couple most likely roos started roosting on box top.I went down to basement this morn and was was laying on floor about 4 ft from brooder on the concrete dead.banty brought up the pasty butt too you need to really check on that especialy first couple of weeks.I know it's gross but ya gott keep the paddy clean lol.I never feed my birds medicated food now had a couple bad incidence with that stuff.Chick's do die even if you have them on a so called red carpet sometimes sadly to say I have cried a river over a few here

That's one of the strange issues with mine, how just a few seem to have the dirty butt problem while others don't, any how, I snag the dirty ones and wipe or pull them as clean as possible, it's a pain, but they're supposed to out grow that problem. Can't come too soon.

Yes! You have to keep their vents unplugged or they can die. Warm wet washcloth, q-tips, warm running water on their hineys...whatever it takes to keep the vent clean. If you use warm running water, be gentle and dry them well. Don't let them get a draft. Do it in a warm room, dry them as well as possible, and right back under the brooder light to finish drying.
