are those cedar chips in the brooder. those are bad for chicks. cedar chips are lethal for chickens. i use rubber shelf linner from walmart. a thick layer of paper towels under the rubber liner.

Yes the cedar chips emit an odor thats toxic to chickens. I just use the paper towels at first too.

Yeah, I always start with flat, untorn newspapers for the first week(ish) then (and I've tried shredded paper, straw, and rubber mats) I use pine shavings. They're just the easiest to clean up and work out better in my compost pile.

I've used pine and corn cob. But yeah the cedar is not good for any small animals. The ammonia in the urine is magnified by the cedar and is very toxic. But all the other things work fine. I personally like the pine better because you have the benefit of nice smelling stuff without it being harmful to your animals. Cute babies though. What is that reddish looking one? Is it a white laced red Cornish? I've ordered some from Ideal that's coming in this week and I was wondering what the chicks looked like.
