Baby chicks in coop

I'm in the process of building a coop and am going to pick up 6 chicks tomorrow to start our flock. I'll probably keep the chicks in the basement for at least a week but is there a reason why they can't stay in the coop (all closed up) with a heat lamp for the 4-5 weeks after that?

The coop is based on the free Purina plans 4x4.

I wouldn't put them in the coop until at least 4 weeks.

I see no reason to not brood them right in the coop...If mine had been done in time, I would have done just that. As long as you secure your heat lamp, and check on them often. Change their water and fill their feed.

It's summer, some people put their brooder box in their garages and such...Mamma chicken would be having them in "her" house, which I would assume would be the coop...so why change mother nature? As long as your coop is predator proof, and it IS summer time, so temps aren't what they are when most people brood their chicks, I see no reason to not put them right in their coop.

Would be what I would do! Everyone has their own way of doing things...do what you feel is best for you and your chicks!!!! but I see no reason to not use your coop from the start!

I plan on using mine next year to brood 6 chicks, separated from the older ones, of course!

Oh also, mine are a bit over 2 weeks and headed for their coop as soon as I can paint it and the paint dries

Thank you, I had the same question!!! My coop is all ready to go and am ordering chicks with a neighbor this week. I am going to put the brooder box in the coop. It's pretty warm here in NY.
