Baby Chicks need help

I have a week and a half old baby chicks and bronze turkeys. I noticed a few days ago that two of the baby chicks were getting pecked at. their little bums have been picked with no feathers, and was red and sore looking. I seperated the two chicks hoping they would heal on their own. Now the two chicks have a white foamy like poop and they have a gross infection smell coming from their bums. I have been bathing them in warm water twice a day. Someone mentioned they could have a tick or mites, but when I bath them in warm water I cant find anything on them. It is breaking my hearts to have them in isolation, as they cry and are getting lonely. Does anyone know what it is and what I should do? They are on medicated starter feed. The other chicks and turkeys are all fine.

I'm not a expert, but first of all I'd separate the chicks and the turkeys. Its best not to raise them together because of the risk of "blackhead" infection.

DE or diatomaceous earth should be used in there bedding to kill parasites, mites etc. I put it under the bedding when I clean out the brooder box if I am keeping the brooder outside of the house. If you add it to thier feed it will kill the bugs internaly too. Be carefull not to breath the stuff not good for human lungs.

Are you useing a consistant heat lamp? They need the warmth to fight off illnesses...

Thanks...I am starting to think I will need to seperate them. The feed store said it is fine for them to be together. At the moment the turkeys do not seem to be aggressive towards the chicks.

I have a red heat lamp on all of them,. I have put the two injured chicks in a box inside with the other chicks. They can still see the chicks but they can't mingle with them. I have to check the soft wood chip bag, I do not think it has DE in it? Not sure, I will check it out.

I am just not sure if it is mites they have, or if it is something else. They do not have any blood in their poop, but it is a wierd white colour.

I'm thinking Cocci because of the poop, treat will sulmet of corrid for a week. The raw bottom could be from pecking, or irritation, I would defiantly check for any little critters. If you have cat's of dogs in the same area, check for fleas. You have to but DE separately, it won't be in with the chips. Make sure it's food grade. I would also look into getting some save-a-chick to help them fight off whatever they have.

Yes, you must buy DE as a seperate item into the bedding. It provides natural pest control both externally and internally. I would move quickly to do what Salt and Pepper suggests.

I was thinking it could be that, but since there was no blood i wasnt sure. If it is not Cocci will it hurt them if I give them corrid? I will get some De tomorrow. Thanks!

Occasionally foamy white poop can be an indication of not enough water. If you think it may be cocci,treat with Corid (Corid kills 9 strains of cocci)dosage for Corid is, if using powder 1/2 tsp per gallon of water if using liquid 2 tsp per gallon of water. Corid will not hurt them. I do not use DE,it is a personal choice anything that has warnings"dangerous if inhaled" cannot be good for my chicks or my family. Everyone has their own opinion about this. Not sure what you mean by terrible smell from their bottoms, have they had pasty butt? Or are you referring to an infection on their bottoms? Wash their bottoms gently,i also dry them with a blow dryer on LOW setting,you can apply a bit of vaseline(around their vent) if they have pasty butt. Yes, keep the two chicks separate, so that the other chicks will not peck at their bottoms. Forgot to mention,if treating for cocci,you have to treat all chicks. For your benefit,i would look up chicken poop,you can have a visual of what is normal and what is not. This is the best way to determine the health of your chickens

Thanks 10chicks, I do not think I will use the DE than. I have kids and other animals and do not want to inhale anything that is dangerous to me.
I think they are getting plenty of water. I have 40 chicks and 6 turkeys and I have two large water feeders that I change the water twice day. The water never runs out when I go to change it.

That is nasty looking,is that poop stuck to her bottom? Looks like her vent is swollen. I would clean her,then apply a antibiotic ointment(nothing ending in caine ie: lidocaine,etc.toxic to chickens). Or if her vent is protruding you can also use preparation H will reduce swelling,apply all around vent area. The chicks are probably pecking at themselves and each other,can you put some kind of divider between the two injured ones? Try a piece of wire,so that they can see each other,but not touch.
