Baby chicks this year 2025

Had to stop at TSC to pick up pine shavings today. It’s the 4th time I’ve been there in a few weeks. Again, no chicks. They saw me peek in the bins to see if anything was there, and said they haven’t had chicks for more than an hour since chick days started. (I wasn’t going to get any, but I always peek at the babies…how can you not?)

As far as pullet chicks McMurray is just about sold out, Meyer is just about sold out, Hoovers and Welp are sold out, Cackle is limited, Ideal is limited and into end of July/August on what’s left, and Mt Healthy has a decent selection considering but much less than they had last year at this time. This is worse than a few years ago. My friends laughed at me when I placed an order in January….thank goodness I did. It’s unbelievable.

Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering if anyone has had alot of issues with baby chicks dying that they bought at Tractor Supply? I keep seeing
posts on FB of different areas where people bought chicks and most or all are dying within the first week. We bought some at Rural King 13 Rainbow chicks, we lost one on the 2nd day, not too abnormal. We then bought 5 barred rock and 5 silver laced wyndotte straight run cause thats all they had, at Tractor Supply, as of today we have lost 5 of them. We have raised chickens for a long time, clear back to when I was a youngster and never had an issue like this before. We do all the things to make sure they have whats needed before they come home. Heat lamps, warm water with added probiotic and electrolytes, good medium pine shavings, chick starter feed etc. Was just wondering if anyone on here has noticed alot are not living after buying at a retailer. Thank you all in advance
My sister in law bought 5 chicks ( 1 for me) and we were waiting for 2 extra ( also 1 for me) She is very experienced with raising them. She got them all from an independent supplier. 2 of the 5 died within a week and one is sick so far. The other 2 we were waiting on never showed up to the supplier so she thinks they and the others they were shipped with died in transit. It is a weird year for chicken shopping. Ive been disappointed multiple times this year.

We got 4 chicks from a local Murdochs finally. 2 were from a bin marked “straight run random rare breed” and 2 were marked “turken pullets”. That was all they had and the woman helping us mentioned the last shipment had all died so most of what they got had been set aside as replacements.

Despite providing the best care we know in terms of heat/food/electrolyte water/fresh water, the 2 random rare breed chicks did not make it over 48 hours. I tried everything I could think of to help them recover and survive but that was our experience this year unfortunately.

Our 2 turken gals are about 8 or 9 days I believe now and seem to be happy and thriving 🤞🏻🤞🏻

I don’t know if you’ve ever had turkens, but they are wonderful! We have one, she is spunky but sweet, quietly chatty, and very hardy. I’m sorry for your losses, but I think you’ll love those ladies! I ordered another this year since we love our “Cheddar” so much! (Her feather head looks like a block of cheese!)

I love to hear this 😊 it’s our first time with turkens, I was told many customers didn’t want them for their strange appearance but we are so enamored with their goofy personalities already and they do seem quite hardy!

Yes! My husband thought I was crazy when I wanted one, but she’s one of his favorites now! He has hair on top with the sides shaved, and a beard, so we say she is his twin! 😂 Good thing he goes along with all my chicken selections or we wouldn’t have given this awesome breed a chance!

Our Turken is 9 years old! We're adding two Turken chicks this year. Turk the Turken has been wonderful. Friendly, great layer not flighty, about everything you would want in a hen. We were recently thinking wow she's getting pretty old and we don't want to be without that breed so we'll add a couple more. Hopefully she will be with us a while longer :).
