Started with 16. Down to 11. Temp is 95 in the heat. They are all 1 day old. Getting medicated turkey feed, 28% protein. Have been doing some reading and read that amprolium is safe for quail. That is in their food.

Any thoughts? Bacteria? Getting trampled? They like to dogpile on each other under the lamp, but the temp is 95 and that is where it should be for day-olds, right?

If they are dog piling they may be too cold... If they get droopy and pant they are to hot...

are they eating and drinking?

And they have a constant supply of both food and water.

I dont know..its tough..I had buttons that did that also..just kept dropping like flies..

if they are piling under the lamp they are too cold regardless of what the temp under it is. The ones on top of the pile are warmer than the ones on the bottom that are getting suffocated

Another thing I've noticed (at least with coturnix) is there are some that just fail to thrive and usually fall dead by day 3 or 4.

At a day old though.. I can't get them to eat or drink so you are definately doing something right

PS, I feed medicated startina. I know people say use non medicated but......

Hi,

Where are you taking the temperature from? Where is the thermometer?

I tend to start of at 100F, and drop it everyday, it always seems to hot, but they thrive on it.

Ironsun.

Thermometer is almost directly under the lamp, right by where they sleep. I raised the temp a bit, up to 100, and just found another dead one.

I never feed medicated feed.

The only time I have had problems is when the eggs were sick or at least they had a disease that was able to pass into the eggs.

I also let them self regulate on the temperature. Our temps drop at night. The light is close enough that they do not pile too bad even with the temp drop and they spread out during the day.

Out of the 30 that hatched 3 days ago I still have 30....fun hatching out your own eggs.
