Ive noticed she seemed a bit off. Still eating and hanging with her sisters. Ive been feeding her by hand to make sure she's getting food. She's got all her feathers her comb and wattle was my first indication something was off. Very pale pink. She's skin bones and feathers. Ive given antibiotics and electrolytes. She was outside walking around this AM but 2p she was laying in run eyes closed not moving. Then she made a sound. She's still alive and drinking water scarcely. Judging from her body mass I'd say parasite maybe as she was eating but obviously was getting zero nourishment. she won't make it i know just trying to love on her til the end. What could I have done better???

I'm sorry to hear about Baby Girl:hugs

I don't think you could have done anything better. I know she's dear to you as are your other hens.

I checked on her every 2-3hrs all night and gave her electrolytes. I honestly did not see how she would survive the night. Came in at 630A to check on her. Eyes opened moved her head around and was tucked in a crouch position as opposed to the previously splayed out position and limp as a dish rag. She literally could not sit up. This AM I made her a scrambled egg with abit of grit which she ate with vigor and drank electrolytes. She's a bit stronger as she's able to sit up. Im attaching pictures as you can see yesterday vs today. I am hopeful she'll make and be my house chicken. I think she was so weak the other girls jumped her. Breaks my heart. But I do believe she might have a intestinal parasite. Im treating her that way anyway.

Poor thing!

It looks like she was scalped in the past. Is she severely bullied by the others?

Maybe she's being kept from food/water.
She's never been bullied that ive seen and we're out there 4xs a day at least and they have almost a 1/2acre fenced to run around in and play in the compost bin.. Im going to put my cameras back up. That's just it. I sit out there everyday. I see her eat drink and give some sass herself but I've never seen any of them jump on her. I truly believe she has a parasite and has gotten weak and one of the girls knew it and started messing with her. Just not sure when..Sat. I noticed she was behaving differently. My regret was not removing her the day before but I've been hand feeding her and knew she was eating. Im just heartbroken over what they did to her. I am almost certain she lost a eye. Its not open and I dont want to mess with it. Im just treating her scalp with antibiotics. I bathed her in Epsom salt and she's drinking electrolytes and poop is normal. She's eating eggs, worms and pellets and grit. I truly believe if I hadn't gone to put ice in their pools and water they would have killed her. 😭

Do you know how she may have been scalped then?

Also, losing an eye is not fun but chickens can adapt super well. I've got a hen who is blind in one eye and she is thriving. Took her a little bit to recover but she is doing better than ever. Mine free range 24/7 and she can navigate the area super well.

She's suffering from injury, she's been scalped. It looks to be healing, but you can clean it with some saline, then put triple antibiotic ointment on the wound.

For her eye, she may not have lost it. You'll have to investigate that further. Rinse the eye out with saline, put Terramycin eye ointment in the eye. Do this a couple of times a day.

Possible she may be sick from something else and the others ganged up on her?? Hard to know. But you need to treat her injuries and work her through shock. While parasites could be part of the problem as could be a number of other conditions, supportive and treatment of the wounds/shock is the most immediate issue that needs to be addressed.

Yes. I believe she might have a intestinal parasite. I was beginning her treatment when all this happened now im trying to help her get over the trauma. I treat her scalp with neosporin. Her eye is completely closed and im not going to try and open it. I am hoping by putting neosporin on it in time it will moisten and open up. Its not swollen but im just concerned about infection so giving antibiotics. I don't want to overload her delicate system at this time. Yesterday she kind of regressed and didn't move much just slept. Today she's eating and drinking better but only wants strawberries and occasional mealy worm. Im trying to fill her with protein. Im getting yogurt today. Her stomach was rumbling as she was eating and drinking. Startled me. She's moving around a little more but for the most part just sleeping.

Thank you. She was acting poorly a few days prior. I had been hand feeding her to make sure she was eating. She was still with all the girls in their yard eating and pecking around. I never noticed aggression at all. Im just heartbroken I didn't remove her but she wasn't isolating as if sick. I really don't know what attacked her. Im assuming a chicken??
