summer has finally arrived here in central VA.Temps in the 90's.and so humid.my feathered friends do have shade, fans and lots of water. But they have their wings lifted and panting..i have a barn fan going full blast in the coop.even with lots of ventilation and fans the temps was still 84 at 9:pm last night.i knew the heat would finally hit us.We have a cool front coming in for the weekend. I'm thankful for that.If we can make it until fall I can relax and not worry so much. What do you do to make your flock comfortable during the hot summer months?

  • Add frozen water bottles inside their waterer in the afternoon
  • Hose down the shrubs that they like to sit under
  • Give frozen treats (corn on the cob and green peas are favorites)

I get home from work at 6:30.and they are my first priority.i have been taking them some cold watermelon, and iced water.their run is shaded and we had some left over sand, which I put that in their run.and I have been pouring water on I have notice that they have been scratching in that.I do get teased weather I have installed ac in their coop.with what I pay for all the fans I keep running.it wouldn't cost anymore.i have thought about it.if the power goes out they would be in big trouble.

I try to not panic ove it. They will get along fine in the heat as long as they have shade and water. Chickens did come originally from tropical areas after all. (... she says as she remembers that there is a 2nd fan in the back of the truck right now that is going up in the rafters of the coop....
