I have recently been taking care of a baby field or deer mouse.. He is very tiny no bigger than my thumb. He was found on a Saturday, he came from a nest that was inside a lawn mower seat. When my dad went to move it, the little guy fell out. I called a wildlife center and they told me to remove the seat, put it back in the shed along with the baby in a small safe area. I put him in a tiny glass cage we have and I kept him warm with water bottles. The mother the next day had moved all her babies except Toby (his name). So I have been feeding him since Sunday, he has a GREAT appetite (Today is Thursday) and he uses the bathroom with help, he eats every 2 hours and I mean I have been up every 2 hours since Sunday. Once in a while during the feeding he would "gape". I watched a video of a baby mouse around the same age "gape" during being fed but he snapped out of it within seconds. Mine on the other hand, curls into a ball like he's struggling and I rub him to stimulate him. Eventually he snaps out of it and continues eating. Up until tonight in the last feeding he "gapes" every time I feed him. I almost can't even feed him he doesn't get anything! I am so stressed out and honestly so sad! I know it's almost impossible to keep them alive. I think when he was out over night he must have gotten cold, and caught pneumonia... I really need a reply, I have posted and emailed numerous sites and people and I just need someone to help me confirm what it is or advice. I don't want him to suffer, he's growing his fuzz and stuff and I've sadly become so attached.. I have taken care of a baby squirrel before to no success!

I have been feeding Toby KMR, and slightly diluted it with Pedialyte. I gave him pedialyte at first when I found him then gradually introduced KMR. He eats it and LOVES it.

I use a paintbrush every time and let his milk warm up in a milk bath

I've changed the temp, adjusted the formula tonight and no success. When he breaths when he "Gapes" it sounds like sticky? IF that makes sense, the sound of sticky or wet... And I am convinced it's his lungs. He is so eager to eat so I am just lost on what to do, I can't get food into him but he wants to eat. I feel hopeless and depressed about it... Someone pleaseeee reply to me soon. I have been up going crazy! Thank you so much!!

Gosh...I feel your pain. I'm sorry that I can't advise you. When we were moving hay bales a few weeks ago, we found three tiny ones...I put them in a container until we'd restocked our hay, and then laid them back down in a little "nest" I made beside the bales. The next morning they were gone, so I assume that mama found then.

Since your mama took the others but left that one, she may have sensed that something was wrong physically with that little one. So maybe, although you've worked hard to save this little guy, it wasn't meant to be. It sounds like you're doing everything right...it's just so hard to watch a helpless animal baby fail...
I hope that someone with experience can advise you...and thank you for trying.
