So, I have three baby japanese quails. All of them where fine until I noticed today one of them looked a bit iffy.

The toes of the baby seem to be dying. The toes are going black and stiff. So far only the tips are bad, but I’m afraid that it’ll kill the baby...

Does anyone know whats going on? Or what I can do...? The baby seems healthy enough, bright and eating.

Thanks...

There is nothing around the toes
Is there a hair or something wrapped around the toes? Are the others showing any signs? What are you feeding them?

Can you post pictures of the toes and your setup?

There’s nothing around the toes...

Niether of the others are showing any sings, at least at the moment.

I’m feeding them quail food, but I don’t know the name of the brand.

Is the food at least 28% protein? I've seen food advertised as "quail food" that is mostly seeds and is as low as 7% protein.

I'm afraid your chick is going to lose those toes. It might still be okay, but keep an eye on it. I would recommend putting some grippy shelf liner or something in your brooder to prevent leg problems.

The feed in the dish in the photo is meant for adult birds, it is way too large for the chicks. You need to feed them a chick starter. Chick starter is much higher in everything baby chicks need and is very fine, so that these tiny birds can actually eat it.

It looks like they all broke the tips and then they are dyeing off and will fall off, to try and help prevent infection put neosporin triple antibiotic ointment on the toes, till they fall off then after till healed, a few times a day like 1-2 maybe 3 if they get dirty

I wonder if they are trying to eat each other’s toes because the food is too big and they’re hungry? What type of food is that, if the food is appropriate for quail you can blend it down to a powder in a blender or food processor.

The feed that is in there is has small stuff in it too, I ran out of the grounded up food, and it was late

But i plan on grounding more up today. So the feed in there is only there for a small amount of time, and it had grounded up quail feed in it.

Can the baby live without toes? What will its life be like?
