Baby Starling UPDATE --Found his home--

Quote:
I agree, I would love to have a crow or any corvid for a pet. When I was a kid I was obsessed with magpies.
Crows aren't exactly endangered or threatened in any way. lol
And I don't buy the "belongs in the wild" bullc... All the "domestic" birds we have were once wild, too.
I suppose its just easier for the lawmakers to say, "don't take any birds out of the wild," rather than make special allowances.

But starlings are pretty cool too, and I suppose I am doing the environment a miniscule favor by taking a couple out of circulation.

Oh and by the way, love your signature, aquaeyes!

There are corvid species available that are legal to keep -- they are all simply not native to the US. What's ironic about the laws is that we don't want to pillage our native wildlife for captive animals, but it's ok to do so in other countries. That's what I mean by saying that native species are somehow deemed holier than the others. And I agree with you about not buying the "it belongs in the wild" argument. I believe that if you are able to keep it happy and healthy (i.e. mentally and physically satisfied) in captivity, then that animal is actually better off than being in the wild -- steady source of food, medical care, avoidance of predators, etc. The key is "if you are able to keep it happy and healthy." A raccoon kept in a dog kennel is not "happy and healthy." A raccoon kept in a large enclosure with things to keep its mind occupied and being fed a healthy diet can be "happy and healthy."

Starlings are pretty cool. I wish I'd have found a baby that fell out of the nest at some point, but I haven't. And if you didn't know, mynahs are starlings, and there are a whole bunch of other species (some called mynahs, some called starlings) that are available to be kept in captivity. You can check out www.mynahbird.org or look up some of the many softbill websites to find out more.

Oh, and thanks for liking the signature. It's just my way of offering some fairness and balance.
