I've got a loud baby too. This year we tried the chick plate instead of the hot light, and I have a white bantam and black standard. They are the same age, 6 days now, and the bantam cries nearly all the time. I tilted the plate so one side is much lower for the little one. The bigger black chick spends more time out from under, which makes the bantam frantic. She is always trying to climb under the black chick. I feel like the black chick is trying to get away from the white one! She calms down when I hold her, so I wonder is she just missing contact, or is she really cold? She won't stay under the plate alone, and the black chick won't stay under the plate. I raised the plate up some more in the front, and added a small stuffy, and just now checked since they were quiet. The black chick is sleeping under the high side, and the white bantam is on top of the stuffy, right against the plate. So maybe both instances are true. I didn't think about a black chick getting hotter... maybe thats why she doesn't spend much time under the plate. Ambient temp in their kennel is 70, so not cold.
