We love having backyard chickens. We have had several flocks and have bought all of our chicks from Mcmurray Hatchery. This year we are trying out Cackle hatchery because we want Silkies and do not want to wait until April. Unfortunately due to a job in the Poulty industry we had to sell our flock last year and currently are waiting on our new chicks to arrive to start again. I had to choose between two jobs and believe it or not the ability to have backyard chickens made the choice easy.
I have five children 1 boy, 4 girls and my 13 year old is in charge of the chickens (although my wife and I do most of the work). With our last flock she sold the excess eggs and it helped teach her the value of money. My 8 year old and 6 year old will be helping with this flock and I hope they take an interest in the chickens as much as my wife and I do. I hope to keep updating my page and am very excited to get our chicks. I built a pretty large brooder that we place in our garage and it gives us a solid 4 weeks of care close by before we move them to the chicken house. I have two chicken houses, one is an old 8x10 shed and the other is a 12 by 12 custom built house I planned and built myself. Both houses are connected to a 60 x 12 run with an 8 foot fence I have divided to keep the flocks apart. My plan was to keep some separate for breeding so the kids can incubate and sell the offspring at the auction. I am going to try that with the silkies and will be purchasing silkies from another hatchery to do so. If I had my choice and money wasn't an option I would retire and have my backyard chickens to keep me busy. Boy would they get spoiled!
