Back Button Not Working

BTW, in addition to the questions below, one more thing we need to troubleshoot this problem is the following:

Please also provide us with:
  1. The URL of the page which you are on on when you are trying to click "back" to.
  2. The page you came from. Note: if you can't get the URL since you can't click "back", just describe the page, e.g., "I was on a thread and had just replied" or "I was on an article about xxxyyy"

There was a bug a few months ago that caused this to happen in certain browsers and with certain ads, but we believe it has been fixed. If you're still experiencing this, please reply with:

  1. Your browser and version
  2. When did it start happening
  3. Does clicking "refresh" allow you to go back
  4. Do you have ads turned on or off
  5. any other info that might be helpful

I use Vista, and IE8.
Am I the only one who has never used a different browser? I don't think there are any other browsers loaded on my computer.
Anyway, it is still happening to me, and has been a recurring issue since the platform switch. I have all the ads turned off - and have had them turned off since the platform switch.

The most recent occurrence was in the the Cochin thread, and someone posted a link to their BYC auction in the text. I clicked on the link to see the auction, and then could not get back to the Cochin thread. The fastest thing for me to do was to go back to my email notification, so I could find my way back to where I left off in the Cochin thread.

And speaking of email notifications, there was absolutely nothing yesterday, and then about 1/2 an hour ago, I got a bunch for different threads, all with the same time stamp. On one of the threads (Cochin), I am now behind over a day with several to catch up on.

Yup, email notifications is a problem we're looking into.

Regarding the back button: I think you may be the only one with ads turned off and also having the problem. I can't emphasize enough how much better a newer browser (FireFox, Chrome) would be, but in the interim, we'll keep looking into the problem. Do you have any browser addons or plugins loaded? Do you have any kind of internet security blocking type programs running?

There you go speaking that foreign language again that I don't understand - what is a browser addon or plugin? (And please don't ask me how my car makes it down the road either - I'm an excellent driver, and I can pump my own gas, but that's about it!!)

At home, I run Trend Micro, but it's the same security system I've had all along. Here at work, we are also on IE8, but I don't know what secruity program we're running. But I do know that it happens here at work also, because I tested that exact thread-to-auction this morning before posting here to see if I was still having problems.

How would I go about loading/installing a different browser? What are the benefits of these other browsers, besides BYC? I've been on IE for so long, both here at work and at home - why do people use other browsers is my basic question, and what happens if I load a different browser for BYC and then don't like it for everything else? I just hate to put something on my computer when I don't know what it will be like.

It's very odd that you're having that problem on two different computers. I'd be surprised if neither computer doesn't already have FireFox or Chrome loaded on it.

Internet technology evolves VERY VERY quickly and so do the tools. IE 8 is now 4 years old... that's akin to using a car that is 60 years old. Sure it will run, but you miss out on a lot of features, performance, etc. that you get from new cars.

We've seen MANY reports from users that reluctantly upgraded from IE 8 to Chrome of Firefox and have said that their browsing not only on BYC got way better, but on other sites as well.

Firefox and Chrome are pretty rock solid pieces of software and are free. There is almost never any harm in downloading them and trying them. Worst case if you don't like it, you just don't use it or even uninstall it without any problems.

So, while we still want to fix things for IE 8 users, we strongly encourage users to move to new versions of Firefox or Google Chrome.

OK - I will try to load one this weekend when I have time to play with it. I'll keep you posted.

But please don't try and talk me into getting a cell phone, cable TV, dishwasher, sprinkler system for the lawn, facebook account, twitter account . . . .

Ok more info. I posted earlier but to recap, I have IE 8 and have the backbutton issue. I've been playing around with the Content Advisor settings and think I've narrowed it down to googleads.g.doubleclick.net being the culprit (as Off-Grid Hen was mentioning earlier). When I allow content from backyardchickens.com and pubads.g.doubleclick.net but block googleads.g.doubleclick.net, I can browse around the forums and various posts and the back button works fine everytime, but as soon as I allowed content from googleads.g.doubleclick.net the back button stops working immediately.
This Content advisor thing is a bit of a pain and doesn't seem like it would be a long term solution (it constantly informs me each time that content is blocked, with no option to say don't show again), and I'm not sure if there is anything that can be done on your side. But I hope this helps.
Oh and DVR??? I don't know about Coopa, but I just now learned how to set the time on my VCR, so I don't think I'll be jumping into this DVR sci-fi technology of which you speak of anytime soon.
