Back in the chicken world

Welcome to BYC! There is so much to see, do, and learn here!:welcome

This video by Kikopup might be a good introduction to training a dog to be calm around distractions such as chickens: How is it possible to use Positive Reinforcement to train a RELIABLE recall? The video description box has links to more information that might be of use to you. Good luck with your house remodel and new chickens! :)

Hi, and welcome! :welcome
I used to have a Brittany, she would hunt and kill any thing, gophers, mice, butterflies, even spiders. I lost 2 fledgling Cockatiels while she learned the parrots were not prey. But, I learned something from a Bed and Breakfast we stayed at where they had chickens. I wanted to stay there, but was afraid to bring my dog due to her bird killing abilities. The chicken owner said, "NO Problem, I have an electric fence around them". So I brought our dog. They had five acres, all fenced and said just let her run! So, our dog ran full speed towards the chicken run. She hit the fence and I swear, she did a mid-air 180, full speed in reverse! She never even looked in the direction of those chickens all week. I now have electric netting around my birds, it keeps them safe from the coyotes, bobcats, raccoons and javalina that used to walk casually through our yard like they owned it. Our neighbor has a little terrier dog, he realllllyyyy wanted to get those chickens, but after meeting the hot electric wire, he now ignores the chickens. Dogs think that the chicken hurt them, and totally leave the chickens alone.
