Back of skull (bone) missing on a new hatched chick. What to do? will the skull bone grow in?

Will the skull bone fill in and the skin grow over the defect? I used Blu-Kote on it but the other chicks still found it immediately. So I removed it, reapplied Blu Kote and returned it to the incubator. What should I do?

I am so sorry.... but you need to cull the chick.




It will not grow back, or close up, or whatever.


If you hatch enough chicks you will get a few defective ones...

Sounds like a birth defect. There could be other things wrong with the chick that aren't visible. Best to cull. The skull will not grow normally.
