As a child i remember having chickens and ducks and turkeys, well my Mom and Dad had them. We kids fed them and played with babies. I loved the fresh eggs. Now as an adult I have my own Chicken coop. Oval Office by name. and a few hens and a rooster. Right now I have what I call just chickens. A couple of reds. a couple of doms and a few white leghorns. I fight the good fight against predators and the elements and its been a learning experience. I now want to incubate and hatch a few, just not sure about mail order eggs. Is there a better site than others and I was thinking I need to find a Texas source so they are not in the mail so long. Any help will be appreciated. Jeri
 
welcome new member. you sound alot like me. first piece of advice i would give you is to experiment with less valuable eggs to get the incubation process worked out that best fits you. "dry hatch vs wet". this may take a few tries if you can find someone who has fertilized eggs locally that you can get your hands on. secondly when you figure out step one than figure WHAT breed you want to raise b4 you spend money on buying eggs. good luck.

You might check out your state thread to see if anyone near you has some available. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/44/texas There is a great article in the Learning Center on Hatching Eggs that covers a lot of the problems associated with shipped eggs. www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-101 another good place to find eggs is the BST forum https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/36/chicken-hatching-eggs and if you have a specific breed in mind, most breeds have individual threads if you do a search.
 
welcome to BYC, I think the Texas thread would be the best place to post regarding wanting fertile eggs. You may find someone close enough so you don't need to ship and may even get to see their set up and birds.

Welcome to BYC!

It is always best to get eggs or stock locally for the health of the birds, but you can order eggs from reputable hatcheries. I have had good luck with Murray McMurray's eggs and healthy birds. However getting eggs from a small local breeder will always yield healthier birds than from hatchery stock.

Keith92, thanks for the advice, I found a lady that sold eggs for hatching about 100 miles from me. she packed them well and gave me three extra in case of breakage and such. So 21 days ago 15 eggs went into the incubator and today 13 hatched. One was infertile and the other I cracked accidentally while putting it into the incubator. I did try to hatch it anyway but at day 7 when I candled it I saw it was not viable. I am thrilled to have such a great hatch rate. I now have to figure which chick is what breed as they were a mixed lot of lavender and buff orpingtons, braman, americauna, and rhode island reds. All big breed chickens. Thought they would do well with my others. Now my son has the bug and wants to hatch all kinds of things. Had to put a halt to that. Need to raise what we have and take care of them. If I let him have his way we would have to sell the cattle to make room for all the chickens. Besides the next thing i want is a few guinea eggs to hatch, I have some friends with guineas so maybe they will let me have a few eggs.
