back wound-maggots- HELP

Ask your vet for some Ivermectin. It will kill the maggots. I usually use one drop for a bird that size just on the tongue. You would probably have to repeat in 10 -14 days.

so i picked up some oxy-tetra (oxytetracycline hydrochloride) antibiotic powder to put in her water, it was about all the feed store had for this type of thing. shes looking good i think i got all the maggots on the first go, the wound is drying nicely and looking pretty good, she seems in good spirits (not lethargic at all).

thank you for all the advice and links! much appreciated, i will keep this thread updated, im hopeful if she can survive the next few days without a infection things will look good.

red-hen- im in canada i would have to go to a vet for ivermectin, i was actually surprised the feed store had this oxy-tetra i got, i do not think they are supposed to sell it.

Wow I wouldn't even mess with that and just put her down. That looks incredibly painful. If it were mine it would not even be a question for me. I would not put a chicken through that.

I'm in Canada too. Getting a small syringe full of Ivermectin shouldn't be a problem. Even one cc. will do cuz you will only be using one drop in her mouth now and again in a couple of weeks.
It is rather expensive to buy the whole bottle.

eating/drinking happily (yay for drinking her water with antibioducts in it). were on day 5, there was a small ammount of brown pus day 2-3 which smelled bad, i flushed the wound with saline and applied polysporin, days 4-5 it has been dry as a bone (no puss), little smell, and is looking good

im hopeful she has survived this long and is thriving the outlook is good.

i did phone my vet, who assured me i was doing everything i could for her (short of taking her for a checkup, but there was nothing my vet could have done anyways).

Try "blu kote" wound dressing, a spray you can find at your local farm store. It works wonders, and other chickens will not peck at the blue color.

It will dry up and sanitize the area, and prevent bacterial growth.
