OK, I have 6 silly hens with little pea brains! They are 11 weeks old and love to hang out at the door every morning waiting for their breakfast, they finally are not afraid of me, they scratch, take dirt baths, love treats, hen peck each other, and dig holes to nap in, they go into their hen house during the day after they pig out each morning to nap, then every night they vie for position in a ridiculous little puppy pile puffed up for warmth in the corner of the run. Now, it is summer time, but unusually cold in the SF East Bay, California for this time of year and the wind has been howling at night for the better part of the last two months. The last couple of days has been hot, but up until now the nights have been cold and windy.

So, why oh why, do they not go into their cozy warm, pine shaving covered, beautiful nesting box havin', double perched chicken condo at night??? Instead, as the sun goes down, you can hear them squawking at each other trying to comfortably pile on top of each other in order to stay warm.

I've tried to entice them with treats, but I can't get them all in there at the same time. It's ridiculous!

Does anyone else's chickens prefer the puppy pile in the cold to perching in a warm house at night? What can I do?

I agree. No matter how well built a run is, a well built coop is the safest place for chickens at night. Lock em in to retrain their little brains.

I agree too. I would also lock them in their coop for at least a couple of days. Good luck and have fun.

Our girls used to pile up in the corner of their run at night too, until one was attacked by a fox. We started locking them up in their coop at night after that. It took a couple weeks but now they go and pile in the coop.

yep I have my girl locked by 8:30 every night. They can come and go in and out all day starting at 7:30 every morning. If you leave them out at night your just going to loose them to the predaters

I also do not give my birds acess to nest boxes yet mune are 13 weeks old,
I want then to use nest box for laying eggs only.when I find the firt egg on the ground then I will open the boxes for them, after there morning food then they can go in the boxes to lay..It is possibe to train chicken with repetition

Yes, I agree with the others here: they need their pea-brains re-trained. A few days in the coop should do it!

BTW, mine sleep in a puppy-pile in the corner of the coop.....Someday they will figure out they have a deluxe roost
