Stupid question. .. I know, but..
Is there a way to create a "backwards" BSL? As in females are barred and males are black. I'm sure there isn't a way, but just curious.
No it cannot be done. To make a black sex link, the hen has to have the dominant barred gene which she gives to her sons but not her daughters. Both genes at that gene pair on the rooster have to be the recessive not-barred gene which he gives to all his offspring.
So you wind up with pullets that only have a recessive not-barred from their father and are not barred. Cockerels wind up with one of each, but the dominant barred from Mommy makes them barred.
The only way you can wind up with a barred pullet is if the rooster is barred. But if he is barred he will also give that gene to his sons who will also be barred.
If you cross a male sex link ("single barred" with solid female you technically get this. But it is 25% barred female, 25% solid female, 25% barred male, 25% solid male.
So it's not a sex linked cross because chick color doesn't predict sex. But technically you do get those chickens.
